If you have never crocheted but want to learn how, this is good video to learn the basics. In this short video she shows you how to do a Chain (ch), Half Double Crochet (hdc), and Double Crochet (dc). There are other stitches to learn as you go along but these are the basics. If you do not like this video there are many more on YouTube.
The only thing I would add to this is to start with a bigger hook, size 5 and up. You can use smaller hooks once you are comfortable crocheting. Her advice on your yarn tension is spot on. However she doesn’t mention how that effects your finished project. If you make it tight in one area but loose in other your project will look funny. So keeping a constant tension will make or break your finished project.
Do not try to make some big project as your first, just practicing rows with no real item in mind is a good place to start. You can make a square and take it out over and over until you are happy with the way the stitches look.
